Host Home - Waterloo Family Picnic - Blank Park Zoo

Host Home

We are celebrating with long-time resident James Holaday, who recently chose to explore a new independent living option through Balance Autism. Earlier this year, James moved into Balance Autism's first Host Home and has been taking steps to further his independent living skills. While Host Homes are not a new service model, they have gained popularity over the past several years as a way for individuals to receive personalized support in a home-like environment. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services describes host homes as an opportunity for individuals to develop meaningful relationships, access community resources, and become active community members. This model also provides individuals with more control, consistency, and stability in the supports they receive and who provides them.

In just a few months, James has excelled, making progress toward his personal goals and flourishing in his new home. Desire, our host, is a Balance Autism staff member who excellently supported James in his previous home and has now proven to be a great host. We are so proud of both of them!

Waterloo Family Picnic

Thank you to all the families and community members who joined us at the Waterloo Family Picnic. It was a wonderfully warm day, perfect for water activities and enjoying the air-conditioned clinic play. We loved seeing everyone visiting and playing! A big thank you to all the staff members who helped with food preparation, setup, and teardown, and a special shout-out to our amazing Admin Assistant, Noelle, for her fantastic face painting. We hope to see everyone again at future events!

blank park Zoo

Thanks to the generosity of Blank Park Zoo, children from our Clive and Altoona clinics enjoyed a memorable visit! In the past, Blank Park Zoo hosted a special day for individuals with disabilities. However, this year they gifted Balance Autism tickets for a visit on a typical summer day!

Zoo day is such a great opportunity for the children to explore, connect, and engage in an environment they might not typically have access to. It’s safe to say that Zoo Day is a fan favorite among both the children and our team!
