SMART Homes, Meaningful Lives:

Incorporating Wellbeing Practices into Independent Living Supports

Taylor Aukes, Adult Community Services Director, helped write and publish an article in the Autism Spectrum News magazine this spring regarding the effectiveness and positive impact SMART home living and new programming have had for some of the adults we serve at Balance Autism.

A brief summary:

James, an adult with autism, who moved into his own apartment in January 2024, is on a journey of finding his independence. At first, he felt a bit disconnected during daily check-ins with his support staff, describing himself as languishing. This experience reflects a common challenge faced by many in the autistic community, where individuals often struggle to flourish due to unemployment, mental health struggles, and feelings of loneliness. Fortunately, organizations like Balance Autism are stepping up to help! They have created the SMART Living program, which is all about promoting independence and well-being for autistic adults.

This exciting program makes use of cool technology, including two-way audio and video devices, allowing residents to connect with their Remote Support Professionals whenever they need a little help or a friendly chat. These professionals check in regularly and facilitate well-being check-ins using the PERMA+ Snapshot tool, which shines a light on six important elements for flourishing: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment, and Health. With a supportive structure in place, individuals like James are encouraged to set personal goals and make positive changes in their lives, transforming from a state of languishing to one of flourishing with the caring support from Balance Autism.
